you know this – probably

Hopefully my website is not your primary news source but for the last hour I have been watching the CNN coverage of the bombings in the U.S. There are lots of stories on this around the web, you will find others if you look.

This is simply astonishing and horrifying. Of course, the idea is not a new one and in fact it has long been clear that airliners are one of the best weapons available if you want to make a big explosion. It has been done before this and sadly with the success of this attack it will happen after this.

I am torn in my reactions. Let’s put aside the shock and horror about the terrorism itself and look forward to tomorrow and the day after. My thoughts focus on two specific issues:

I want us to find out who did this and put a bullet through their head. Diplomacy is simply no longer the answer. We need to look to the Mossad to find out how we make this sort of thing too expensive to contemplate. Hopefully it will finally be clear to some of those out there who think violence is never the answer that sometimes violence is the only defense.

I fear for our constitutional rights. In the wake of the last bombing at the Trade Center and the other terrorist attacks we have seen the specter of terrorism used to justify violations of our privacy and our safety. It has given the FBI and related agencies unprecedented power to use force and other means with what I might consider wild abandon. Just as we were making some progress in winning back some rights to protect ourselves and our privacy this happens.

The true damage done by these attacks may well be to the state of freedom and democracy, not buildings and lives

As for lives, I have been able to contact some of my friends and unable to contact others. Let’s hope it works out OK.
