OK… so I joined a new mailing list. The usualy political stuff from some of the usual perspectives. Instead of trying to reply tot he last few days of posts I decided to just summarize. Since I love you guys here too I’m goanna put the whole email here on this blog.
You probably know most of my thoughts on the topic, but it can’t hurt to read more about what I think :)
In other news? Looks like its going to be an interesting day though maybe a long one. I was going to take a nap for a while (been up since (06:30 am) but I had to deal with a server issue and now it’s almost time for the Dune miniseries rebroadcast on SciFi.
While we are on the topic – here is an amusing link: lgf ISM Human Shield Alice Coy

Subject: [PoliticSMinNC] Let’s take it from the top…
Hey all,
Some of you might know me, some might not. I just read all the archives and think a re-cap might be worth the time here :)
The Motives
This war is about a few things:
- Geopolitical advantage
- Moral advantage
- Economic advantage
That about covers it. Now, the fact that those realities exist does NOT lend any truth to simplistic and shallow slogans and understandings that effectively boil down to: “No blood for oil” and other such silliness.
Are we there to gain advantage in the power dynamic of world politics? You betcha.
Having Saddam out of power is a good thing for the USA… and the fact that he is a murdering thug just makes it all the more useful to do.
Are we there to promote freedom? Absolutely.
The reality is that this administration and most of the American people actually believe in the concept of a democracy and freedom. I know, it’s passé ©n the left wing to actually believe in something like this but there you are. So when possible, getting rid of this thug is a good thing.
Are we there to gain economic advantage? Yup.
Promoting freedom is dramatically in the self interest of the USA. Each country that becomes free inevitably turns to capitalism (because capitalism is the embodiment of freedom as an economic force). Thus, the global market is enhanced and things are good for the USA.
Conclusion: So not only do we get to make some money out of a free Iraq, but we get to topple a murdering thug and gain more influence in a crucial region of the world. :)
Again a good thing.
The situation in Iraq
Many, many people in Iraq want to be free of this guy. I know, this is also not popular in the “peace” movement. Obviously anyone the US doesn’t like is a choir boy who is the chosen leader of his people right?
Wrong. Torture is common, secret police raids are common, the people starve because the regime in question misuses funds to purchase almost anything but food.
He is a bad guy, get used to it. Iraq, and the world, will be better off with him gone.
The situation with the UN
The UN is a fine organization – but it is not and never will be a World Government. The US does (and always must) retain sovereign control of it’s own decisions, defense and ability to act in it’s self interest.
To subsume the decisions of the US to the UN in their totality would be to fatally betray this nation, and I for one am pleased that we have not done so.
It will >NEVER< be a good idea to allow the UN to be the sole deciding factor in whether the US uses force or takes action to counter a threat.
Thus, when the interests of the UN and those of the US diverge radically, the US >must< act in its own best interests, not those of the UN. This is even more evident when it is clear that the UN is being blocked and stonewalled by nations with veto power.
The UN issued its warnings. The UN put out its deadlines. The UN sent in its inspectors. The UN failed in all this. Then, when the time came to take action the UN failed to follow through.
In the end, the UN has shown itself to be an ineffectual and irrelevant organization for dealing with situations requiring strong action. This is not an uncommon situation for the UN.
Defying the will of the UN is not something to take lightly either politically or morally – but there are times when it must be done. This is one of those times.
On the topic of “International Law” and the “World Court”
Let me put it as simply as I can. As long as there is a US government, it had damn well better make sure no US serviceman appears in front of a “world court”.
As for “international law”… there is no such thing in any real sense. What there IS is a series of treaties and organizations that attempt to enforce them.
Given our recent experience with the UN, where it became graphically clear that large nations like China, France and Germany are perfectly willing to misuse and misapply the concepts of “illegal war” and “war crime” to serve their own political ends it would be a crime to leave the fate of a US citizen at the mercy of a politically motivated lynch mob.
“Peace” protests
Hey, I LOVE the 1st amendment. You want to protest? Good for you. I don’t even care if you “support our troops”. You can shout, scream and march around with signs all you want. That doesn’t make you a “traitor” or “un-American”.
Just don?t expect me to take you seriously if you aren’t making any sense… and most of you aren’t making any sense. You might make more headway if you actually tried to understand what’s going on.
Of course, the “peace” movement doesn’t actually have a single agenda. It isn?t a movement in any real sense it is a conglomeration of movements who temporarily share a platform. Usually under the auspices of A.N.S.W.E.R. – a international anti democracy, Stalinist organization with the stated goal of the overthrow of the US government.
Everyone with an axe to grind or a pet conspiracy theory is marching for “peace”. They ignore of course that most of their signs are mutually exclusive… that doesn?t matter! Just march! Someone in this crowd has to be right!
If you decide to gather with a bunch of your friends and carry signs I’ll leave you alone.
If you and a bunch of your friends decide to “shut down” a city, block traffic or business then you will be moved – by force if necessary. Be proud of it… the whole point of civil disobedience is to force a conflict with “the man” so go to jail like good little “revolutionaries” when it happens. That way you get what you want and the rest of us can go about out lives. BTW – try and avoid defecating on anything else… it didn?t make much of a statement when you tried last time.
If you and a bunch of your friends decide to go and be “human shields”, call for someone to bomb the US or express your happiness that 9/11 happened to NYC then you ARE anti-American (as opposed to un-American) and I will treat you appropriately.
Just remember as you march that what you are ACTUALLY protesting is the removal of a torturous, murdering dictator who has killed, starved and raped his own country. He has wiped out the families of all who oppose him and the rest of the population lives in fear.
But don?t let that stop you! You missed the 60′s so by all means get out there!
And enjoy the fact that while you march in a country that allows you to do so you are supporting a country that would have you shot for protesting the dictator in power.
Enjoy, and thanks for the list :)
